A 12-year-old boy died Sunday after going under in the Presumpscot River in Westbrook.

The child went under the water about 4:03 p.m., near the Lincoln Street boat launch, and didn’t resurface, according to Westbrook Police Chief Sean Lally.

Rescuers searched for the child, who was pulled from the river about 7:07 p.m., not far from the boat launch, Lally said Sunday night.

Rescuers performed life-saving measures before the boy was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he died.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time,” Lally said.

No additional information was immediately released.
