I think a recent letter to the editor in the Bangor Daily News highlighted the failures of our media and the education system in this country. The author expressed concern about returning to the 1901 flag because of its perceived resemblance to the “Appeal to Heaven” flag, which he claimed to be a symbol of the “far right.”

There is nothing “right wing” about the “Appeal to Heaven” flag. It is a Revolutionary War flag commissioned by George Washington based upon John Locke’s statement that when all other alternatives of seeking justice have been exhausted, only an “appeal to heaven” remains. It is an honored part of our history, like the Gadsden flag, the Bennington flag and the Betsy Ross flag.
