I don’t know about you, but I’m getting increasingly sick of the unproductive noise from Washington, D.C. That’s why I’m very glad that Sen. Angus King announced he is running for re-election to keep getting things done in the Senate for Maine and the country.

As a former Republican state senator, I still remember Ronald Reagan’s 80/20 rule: “The person who agrees with you 80 percent of the time is a friend and an ally, not a 20 percent traitor.” I think of that every time I see King working with Sen. Ted Cruz on modernizing ocean navigation for sport fishing, or with Sen. Elizabeth Warren to study brain trauma in the military. Neither political party has a monopoly on good ideas; as an independent, King gets to shop around the marketplace of ideas.

Being in Congress shouldn’t be about TV airtime or retweets — it should be bipartisanship guided by the 80/20 rule. That’s how the infrastructure bill became law, the “CARES” COVID relief bill was passed, and how we got broadband investments for states and tribal governments.

There’s so much more that unites us as Americans, and especially as Mainers. I really believe that. Sen. King looks to build consensus around ideas, find common ground, and get things done.
