A Paris man allegedly struck an off-duty police officer with a car on Tuesday evening.

Michael Carleton, 29, has been charged with aggravated assault and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Joe Correia, a 31-year-old from Norway who serves as a reserve officer for the Oxford Police Department, was off duty and outside his vehicle about 6 p.m. when Carleton allegedly struck him on Crocket Ridge Road in Norway.

An altercation then broke out between Correia and Carleton, who was eventually arrested and taken to the Oxford County Jail in South Paris.

Correia was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for injuries not considered life-threatening.

The investigation is ongoing.
