QUOTE OF THE DAY

“At a time when voters are in some cases finally tuning into a race, you’ll see campaigns do all they can to get their messages aggressively across.”

— Republican strategist Brent Littlefield on the messy 2nd Congressional District primary being waged on conservative radio.

TODAY’S TOP MAINE STORIES

In a rural Maine town, marijuana grow house raids are leaving residents confused. People in Norridgewock said their former neighbors posed less of a threat than those trafficking more lethal drugs like fentanyl.

The 2nd Congressional District Republican primary is getting messy. State Reps. Austin Theriault and Mike Soboleski are vying to face U.S. Rep. Jared Golden.

A $2 million makeover turned an old Maine post office into a ritzy home. Overlooking the Sheepscot River, it was constructed in 1870 using bricks stolen from Fort Edgecomb.

Property owners have begun registering their short-term rentals with the city of Bangor. But many short-term rentals remain unregistered.

It’s getting harder to find cheap parking in Bar Harbor this year. The summer tourism mecca has increased the number of public downtown parking spaces for which it’s charging the premium rate of $4 an hour.

FROM THE OPINION PAGES

“Generosity is needed at all times, not just right now. And as always, the more we give, the more we get out of life. Of course, not everyone has the means to hand out $1,000 envelopes, but all generosity, within the bounds of what we’re capable of, can have a meaningful impact on the world around us.”

LIFE IN MAINE

Maine farmers and homesteaders have struggled to access veterinary care for decades. That shortage of veterinarians could pose a health hazard to animals and humans.

Josh Webber was fishing on the Penobscot River in Old Town as he often does. But his Memorial Day catch was anything but usual.

It’s a common sight: A mother deer and her fawn grazing amid Maine’s springtime abundance. This video captures a young fawn and her mother grazing without a care.
