Norway Savings Bank produces and releases free safe banking video series for community members to learn about today’s common scams

6 June 2024

NORWAY — “Americans lose billions of dollars each year to fraud, including countless people in Maine. As a mutual bank, we’re dedicated to serving our customers and communities, and trying to help our neighbors identify and avoid today’s common scams felt like a great way to do that.”

The words of Dan Walsh, president and CEO of Norway Savings Bank, explain the motivation and purpose behind the new Safe Banking video series produced by NSB. The four-part series is now available for viewing at www.norwaysavings.bank/security or www.norwaysavings.bank/security/#Safe-Banking and excerpts from the series will be featured on the bank’s social media platforms each Tuesday throughout the summer.

“This series features NSB team members and community members providing the tools and knowledge necessary for people to protect themselves against today’s most prevalent scams,” said Walsh. “These videos strengthen our efforts to safeguard our customers and non-customers so they can spot scams and potential fraud in advance.”

The first video in the series provides an overview of scams in general, including how scammers find victims. Successive videos explore specific scams that are most commonly used in 2024, the “red flags” people can use to spot and avoid fraud, and what steps should be taken if you’re a victim of a financial scam to mitigate damage and recover.

“The scenarios and fraud attempts that are spotlighted in the videos are drawn from situations that our team members frequently hear about,” said Darci Hamm, executive vice president and chief operating officer for NSB. “It’s crucial that people recognize how common it is to be confronted with a scam. This is a topic that people can identify with and this information can really help. It’s really to everyone’s benefit to get the word out.”

“These videos will help viewers make better decisions, protect themselves by being more aware of what they are sharing, and identify scam warning signs,” said Randy Easler, senior vice president and senior retail banking officer for NSB.

The series also provides NSB with another opportunity to carry out the customer care that has helped define the bank since its inception in 1866.

“Serving and protecting our customers, as well as delivering dependable financial guidance and peace of mind to those who depend on us, are our top priorities,” said Walsh. “This beneficial series meets a community need, especially for those who don’t realize how widespread this issue is. We’re proud to be able to extend this education and guidance.”
