Small plane crashes into Androscoggin River

A small plane made a crash landing in the Androscoggin River in Topsham after apparent mechanical issues, according to the local fire and rescue department.

Topsham Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a plane crash in the river around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the department. The pilot and only occupant escaped the plane and was picked up by two kayakers, who brought him to the shore. He was transported to a local hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The Topsham Police Department, Lisbon Fire Department, Maine Warden Service and Brunswick Maine Fire Department assisted Topsham Fire and Rescue. The Department of Environmental Protection and the Federal Aviation Administration have been notified, according the Topsham’s department.
