A Fort Fairfield man died after being struck by a tractor trailer on Route 1A on Thursday.
Robert Chambers, 63, had been southbound while driving a Can-Am UTV on Route 1A in an area where ATV drivers typically gain access to the trail system, according to the Fort Fairfield Police Department.
An initial investigation shows that Chambers had turned into the roadway from the shoulder to attempt to cross the road to an ATV trail head. As Chambers was turning the vehicle, he was struck by a southbound 2007 Kenworth tractor trailer at around 1:45 p.m., officials said.
Chambers, who had not been wearing a seatbelt or helmet at the time of the crash, was ejected from the UTV and died at the scene. Camille Aub-Roy, 21, who had been driving the tractor trailer, was not injured in the crash.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing. The area of the crash was shut down for around three hours as the scene was cleaned up, but has since been reopened.
